Amplifying Spanish-Speaking Voices in Sickle Cell Disease Care
This September, Sickle Cell Prodigy will be at the SCCAPE Show & Tell Expo sharing our research abstract for our Spanish Support Group. Through these conversations, we have gained valuable insight into the experiences, needs, challenges, and priorities of Spanish-speaking patients and families.

At SCCAPE, we’ll be sharing our research abstract highlighting what we’ve learned through this work and why language-accessible, culturally responsive support is an essential part of equitable sickle cell care. We’re proud to bring the experiences of Spanish-speaking individuals and families living with sickle cell disease into a space where healthcare professionals, researchers, advocates, patients, and community leaders come together to exchange ideas and advance SCD care.

Why This Work Matters
Sickle cell disease affects an estimated 100,000 people in the United States, while Spanish-speaking communities represent an important and growing population within the broader SCD community. Yet significant gaps remain in our understanding of the experiences of Spanish-speaking individuals living with SCD.

For immigrant families in particular, language differences can intersect with cultural expectations, healthcare navigation, and access to resources—creating additional barriers to care and support.
Our Spanish Support Group is one way Sickle Cell Prodigy is working to address these gaps.

And listening means creating spaces where patients and families can communicate openly, feel understood, and help shape the resources and services designed for them
