Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Your questions about life before and after transformative therapy — answered with care.

About Sickle Cell Prodigy

Sickle Cell Prodigy is a patient-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to redefining survivorship for individuals living with sickle cell disease who are exploring or recovering from transformative therapies, including bone marrow transplant and gene therapy. While medical innovation has expanded curative options, many patients and families remain under-supported in navigating treatment decisions, recovery, and long-term quality of life.

Our mission is to simplify healthcare navigation by providing clear, culturally responsive education, personalized guidance, and community-based support for patients and care partners across the treatment continuum. We elevate lived experience through survivor storytelling and partner with clinicians, researchers, and community stakeholders to ensure patient-informed approaches to survivorship care.

Sickle Cell Prodigy sits at the intersection of medicine, community, and identity. We are a collective of survivors, caregivers, advocates, and health partners working to ensure that lived experience informs care models and strengthens health outcomes. Our vision is a global framework in which survivors of bone marrow transplant and gene-based therapies are fully supported in redefining their health, identity, and quality of life.

Is Sickle Cell Prodigy a Medical Provider?

No. We are not medical providers. We are an advocacy and education non-profit organization that collaborates with clinicians, researchers, and community leaders to ensure patients have access to reliable information and holistic support.

What does “Transformative Therapy” mean?

Transformative therapy refers to treatments — such as bone marrow transplantation or gene-based therapy — that aim to correct or replace the faulty gene causing sickle cell disease. These therapies can potentially eliminate symptoms and complications, offering what many call a “functional cure.”

How do I know if I’m eligible for a Transformative Therapy?

Eligibility depends on several factors, including your health status, age, donor match availability (for transplants), and treatment center requirements. We can connect you with trusted clinical partners and educational resources to discuss eligibility with your healthcare team.

What are the risks and benefits of these therapies?

Both bone marrow transplant and gene-based therapy carry potential benefits — such as reduced pain and improved quality of life — but also involve risks like graft-versus-host disease, infertility, or infection. Our programs help patients understand both sides so they can make informed decisions with their care team.

Life After Treatment

What does “Life after Cure” look like?

Survivorship is unique for everyone. Many patients experience improved health but may face emotional, physical, or social adjustments. Our Survivorship Circle and Wellness Lab programs provide community, education, and tools to help patients rebuild confidence and live fully after treatment.

Why do some survivors feel isolated after therapy?

It’s common for survivors to feel like they’ve lost part of their identity as “warriors.” The journey after a curative treatment can bring new challenges — from lingering side effects to mental health struggles. That’s why Sickle Cell Prodigy exists — to make sure no one walks that path alone.

What kind of support does Sickle Cell Prodigy offer post-therapy?

We offer mentorship through the Survivor Health Match, wellness workshops, storytelling programs, and host bi-annual survivor socials to foster connection and healing. Our approach is holistic — caring for the mind, body, and spirit.

How does Sickle Cell Prodigy work with researchers and clinicians?

We collaborate with healthcare institutions, researchers, and industry leaders to ensure patient experiences directly inform educational materials, study design, and care models. Our goal is to build bridges between science and the people it serves.
